Where can I buy a tarantula spiderling in California?
I already have a rose hair and would like to move on to something a little harder. My tarantula is moving into her brand new tank this week and I’d like a baby to fill her old one (when older of course). I’m looking mainly for a Avicularia metallica tarantula but I’m looking either online or a shop that deals with mostly with tarantulas. Sorry but Pet stores such as Petsmart and Petsco know next to nothing about them. I live in Kern County California so anywhere close to that should be good. Nothing close to San Diego or past Frenso, It’s too far to drive. Thanks.

Most people who breed tarantulas will know how to pack with heat packs to send them off well. Normally though, they will wait to ship till temperatures in both places are at their best. I’ve ordered most of my 45 tarantulas online and had them shipped and haven’t had one die in the mail yet. My sickest ones were the ones I purchased locally from the pet shop that it turns out sells wild caught ones they buy off an importer.
Though, because of shipping prices, it may be better to wait till you see a couple that you want. I always wait till I see a few to order at the same time.
Avicularia’s can be a bit fragile as spiderlings, so it may even be a good idea to buy a few of them to make sure you get at least one female so that you will have it longer.
The best thing I’ve found for housing little slings it those little display cubes sold in craft stores. Here’s what they look like.

They’re really cheap and look nice, especially when you drill the ventilation holes in a pattern. When you drill the holes, you have to be careful or they will crack. I’ve also used a nail heated over a candle to melt though it, but, then some of the holes turn black and the fumes are absolutely noxious. Definitely something you need to do outside. After that, wash them really well or the fumes can be harmful to your new spiderlings.

Another couple easier ones I’d recommend are grammastola aureostriata and acanthoscurria geniculata. Both make great display animals as adults. The A. geniculata is a more defensive one and probably shouldn’t be handled, but, they are just about always out in the open where you can see them.
The other thing you could do is just call local pet stores that specialize in reptiles to find out if they ever order tarantulas. Sometimes they’ll let you special order. You will want to find out who they order from though as you probably won’t want to get a wild caught.
