I would like to get a pet bird, but have never had one before. What’s the best species of bird to start with?

I have no other pets, so I could allow it free roaming of the house. I’d like a bird that would be friendly, inexpensive, and easy to care for.

Meeting your specifications if friendly and inexpensive I would say start with a conure or cockatiel. They are both great sized birds and are easy to train and take care of. You can always expand your bird collection later on when you get familar with the care of birds.
