Cat Pet Door
Any suggestions/tips for relocating an indoor/out door cat to an indoor only location?
My 12 year old cat currently lives on a large property with 3 other cats and a dog. He doesn’t care much for the other pets and usually picks fights with them. He is allowed to freely roam in and out of the house. This summer I will be moving him to my apartment and keeping him indoors only. He will be my only pet. He has lived at his current location all of his life. Will the change be too stressful for him? Do you think he will miss the other pets?
We had to do this with our male cat–almost the exact same circumstances too.
What your cat will want to do when you move is go back to where you lived before because that’s where he was comfortable and felt safe.
What you will have to do is move your cat into a room with his food, water and kitty box and do not let him leave that room for 3-4 months. It will be his cave, his safe spot. Make sure it’s a room that you will be in often enough to give him attention (bedroom, spare office someone goes into, etc).
After awhile he will relax and get comfy then after 3-4 months you can let him out to explore the rest of his space. He may not come out at first, but you can let him out for longer and longer and eventually just leave the door to the room all the time.
Good luck!
