Cheap Pets For Adoption
I think one of my pair of male rats is actually a female. Now what do I do?
I just bought two male rats from a PetCo earlier today, and I’m pretty sure that one is a female. S(he) makes it difficult to check, but the fact that I have to CHECK indicates that he’s a she. His/her little brother has visible testicles, and he’s obviously younger.
With that said, I’m very hesitant returning her to the store. I was asked by one worker (who picked her up by her TAIL!!!) “what kind of snake do you have?” and when I was checking out, the clerk asked me if I was “keeping them as pets?”
I fear for the fate of this little girl should I bring her back to the store. With that said, I do NOT WANT BABIES! And for all I know, she’s already pregnant. I don’t know how long she was in the cage with the males.
is it possible she’s a boy with um, no testicles?
and if not, now what do I do?
Should I give her up for adoption? How do I do that?
otherwise, I don’t have much money. Any place in Atlanta fix rats for cheap?
Thanks in advance!
I would separate them immediately as she may not be pregnant yet. As the male is smaller he may not be fertile but if she was in a mixed sex environment at the store she probably is. The gestation period is three weeks and she could have as many as 15 babies. The do have a 5 day ovulation cycle so if she has been with the males for over five days she has probably been caught.
Males as young as two weeks have external visible testes so I don’t see there is much possibility of her being a him.
I will not sell rats or any rodents as live food in my store and I would find a local pet store that does the same if you want to rehome your baby rats.
I own a pet store and care sheets are free on my web site
