PET-CT Scanners : How do they work?
Ok firstly how is it pronounced? I always thought it was PET C.T but it could be P.E.T.C.T.
Anyway how do they work? Also when we’re they invented and how was their development important?

Well, PET and CT are actually different methods.
PET (positron emission tomography) is a method where a positron emitting radionuclides (like Fluorine-18) are laced to specific compounds that seek out a particular tissue/process. When a positron is emitted it combines with an electron which produce photons that travel in opposite directions. A ring of detectors captures the events. With computer algorithms, an image is constructed.
CT are pretty much 3D x-ray. it depends on the particular machine, but basically, an x-ray source and the detectors rotate about the patient taking various 2D x-rays, which and be combined to form 3D image.
PET-CT combines both in one machine as each method above has there own limitations. PET scanners are good for metabolic stuff as you can put the radiotracer on various compounds depending on the information sought. However, the detectors and the nature of the radiation has poor resolution. X-rays and the detectors have a much better resolution to get detailed anatomy.
Not sure when they were made, but their development is important as accurate information is always need for medical diagnostics.
