Is my pet Rat sick or is it the bedding?

Ok, don’t yell at me, but yesterday I bought a couple young male Rats at Petco. They seemed fine when I first bought them, but after I got them into their cage, one of them started sneezing like crazy. Otherwise, he’s eating,drinking,has energy and is friendly. I don’t know if he’s sick because the bedding I bought does contain baking soda for odor control. Should I bring him back today or just buy new bedding? The bedding is made from recycled newspaper.

Sneezing is normal for rats who come into a new environment; however, you want to cover your bases.

Things to check for or change:
Change your bedding to something Without odor control, anything with smelly-good in it can cause respiratory problems, so this could be the problem.

Make sure they are not close to a vent or open window, anything that will blow air into the cage. This will cause lots of sneezing.

If you’re using any fabrics, change your detergent. Many detergents have smelly-good in it, and this can cause sneezing as well.

I suggest starting there and seeing what happens. If the sneezing persists for more than five days, I would take him to the vet to get proper medications.
