Is it difficult to travel with pets (dogs) on the planes?

I live and work about 13 hours away from my hometown and where my family still lives. When I go home to visit, usually fly because I can not stand being on the road 13 hours. However, I am really hoping to get a small dog (10 pounds or less) and I wonder if it is difficult to fly with a pet. He raised several airlines to company policies and it seems that many of they allow pets. For those of you who have a flow with pets (or know more about flying with them than I do), please advise me whether or not its hard to have a pet and being able to fly home on one occasion. I usually go home a couple of times a year (usually around holidays). By Of course, probably would not have my pet with me every time, just occasionally, if I stayed home to visit for a while. Thank you!

I would not recommend flying with a pet. I did it once and was horrified by how they treat them. They are treated like a piece of luggage. May fall outside the track with the luggage in the cold or the scorching heat waiting to be placed and removed the plane. If you're flight is delayed, then you have no idea where they keep the animal. The airlines sometimes lose the animal or left out of it's cage. You should not sedate your pet because they get everything moved and shook much they hurt crashing against the walls of the cage. Find a good pet sitting service, neighbor or kennel for your pet when you're gone. It's too stressful for you and the animal. Good luck!
