How to protect pet dogs from wild coyotes?

I live in suburbia, which is next to a major highway, but I can hear coyotes howling at night. My wall is only a chain link fence 4 foot. Does anyone know how I can protect my dogs? I had never thought about it, but I saw that there were coyote attacks in a nearby town. What, in any case, I can do to protect within reason? I mean, I sure I could build a wall 10 feet high with a lid to keep them out, but I'm looking for something that can really afford to do, short of forcing my dogs to stay inside all day. I have three dogs, ranging from 20-35 pounds. Is there safety in numbers? Is there such thing as a coyote-repellent? In response, Please indicate if you have official knowledge or are brainstorming. Thanks!
