For pet/animal lovers: how do you feel when you hear news stories about extreme animal cruelty like this one?
Four teenagers in Australia have been charged with an attack on an almost blind greater flamingo, thought to be one of the oldest of its kind alive:

They said on the news that the teens might even possibly receive up to 4 years in prison if convicted. Do you think that such a sentence would be rather harsh…or do you think it fits the crime?
Also, do you think that people who are inclined to hurt defenseless animals would be very likely to inflict similar treatment on other people (e.g. the elderly, small children, people with physical disabilities)?
It’s good to see a lot of you are just as outraged as I am over such a senseless crime against a helpless animal.
However, there is some good news about the flamingo’s improving condition which appeared today:

As far as animal cruelty goes, it’s not that bad. Personally I think dog fighting is much, much worse, and it’s much more common. I’ve also heard of kittens and puppies being thrown out of vehicles driving on the freeway and watched a video of a puppy being thrown off a cliff in Iraq…
I think people who are cruel to animals are simply cruel-hearted people. In all of these instances, the animal has done nothing to provoke the person or people. It is simply a wish to HURT something that motivates them so they take it out on the easiest target ( a blind flamingo? Seriously now, why not attack a tree? Not only is it blind, it can’t run, either. Oh. Wait. Because trees don’t feel pain and aren’t nearly as fun to kill).
In my mind these people are extremely dangerous, and will probably do something to hurt a person in the future if they haven’t already.
Jail time isn’t enough for these people, personally I think they should be tied down and beaten at random.
