What does bonded and insured mean?

I just opened a mobile pet grooming service. As part of my service, I also provide critter sitting. I have recently been asked to become “bonded and insured”. Well, my business is insured. But I don’t know what being bonded is, and who do I talk to to get bonded?

You talk to the agent that got you your business insurance, about getting bonded.

Now, there are HUNDREDS of different types of bonds, and it’s not at all like insurance. See, a bond is all preset. It’s a guarantee by the insurance company, that someone (you) will or will not do something (won’t steal the dog), and it’s a guaratee to a specific entity (your local government, or the person you’re petsitting for), and if you DO break the terms (ie, if you steal the dog), then the bond pays the preset penalty amount, to the specific entity you named in the bond.

Unless your local government requires some kind of surety bond to the city or state, you’d need a bond for each and every client you have, because it won’t carry over from one to the next. ONLY the named party is covered.

So bonding, is pretty useless, for this type of business.
