Any good websites for 6 year old children to learn about the insects in Hawaii?

We are travelling to hawaii this summer with friends. One of them has a 6 year old son who is afraid of bugs, so I’ve been working with him to help him get over the fears. Part of the plan, is we are getting a bug catcher, and he and I are going to go on a bug adventure to catch bugs that we can keep for pets for 1 day. He’s excited to give them names, and feed them, and watch them in the bug catcher. I’d like to make a colouring book or cut outs for him to play with on the plane as well. As then it will make it more exciting for him since he will have ideas of the kinds of bugs he would like to look for on our adventure.

Only problem with this, is that I’m from canada and aren’t familiar with the different types of insects in Hawaii, so I need to learn too. -especially if there are any poisonous ones, or ones that bite so we know to stay away from those.

Any good websites that are children friendly to learn about the insects of Hawaii??
Thanks!

I believe it’s mainly the centipedes, wasps, scorpions, and flying cockroaches you need to watch out for. There are also very large spiders that actually like to chase people, but they look worse than they bite.

Anyway, being afraid of bugs is a somewhat healthy protective mechanism we evolved for good reason, and getting bitten or stung can be even more dangerous for a child. It can be good to help a child learn to not be afraid of every single thing (like potato / pill bugs), but you should probably teach him to steer very clear of things like centipedes, wasps, etc. — learning to have a calm reaction to some rather than swatting away can be good though.

Anyway, lots to enjoy in Hawaii, but there are indeed some “unfriendly” insects you wouldn’t want to try and capture and keep as pets. :)
