What am I supposed to do about my new ferret?
Ok. So yesterday I got a ferret, here’s her story:
Someone got her from a pet store when she was a baby. While she was a baby, obviously, she bit people and they dumped her at the Humane Society. Eventually she was taken to a ferret shelter, in a city a couple hours from where I live, where they fed her live prey and claimed they rehabilitated her for biting.
We found her online and decided to get her. My grandparents, who happened to be driving through that city picked her up for us on Tuesday and came home Friday.
Well, while they had her she would bite and draw blood.
Since we’ve had her, she’s bitten 4 times, drawing a little blood only once.
She’s only 9-12 months old and I would hate to have to give her up because she bites.
Can anybody give me some advice?
I tried scruffing her once, which ended in her biting again when I let her go.
And mostly when she bites it’s feet like she’s trying to play, or if you move too close she’ll bite your feet.
Help?
Give MMFR a call http://mmfr.savetheferrets.org/ for tips. They dealt with a lot of biters. Also a lot of biters are not able to be rehabbed and have to go to homes that realize or deal with the occaisional biting.
Scruffing takes weeks to sink in, unfortunately. Also, like you said you can get bit a few times before she realizes she doesn’t want to have that kind of attention, and then moves on.
